Robert McQueen

Director, dramaturge and teacher, Robert McQueen, has worked across the United States, Canada and internationally. On Broadway Robert was the Associate Director of MAMMA MIA and directed the US National, Las Vegas, Mexico City, Sao Paulo and Buenos Aires companies of the show. Robert was also the Resident Director on the National Tour of the Hal Prince and Susan Stroman production of SHOWBOAT. Robert is the Director of NoteWorthy the new musical theatre works project of the Musical Stage Company in Toronto, who commission and develop new works from Canadian and American musical theatre writers. This past season, Robert directed two of the company’s premiere productions ~ REFRAMED, 3 one act musicals inspired by paintings from the Art Gallery of Ontario collection which played to sold out houses in the AGO’s Paris Salon Gallery, and YOU ARE HERE; a new work by the writers Neil Bartram and Brian Hill (Broadway; THE STORY OF MY LIFE), which premiered this past Fall at the Thousand Islands Playhouse. Other theatre production includes THE MAN OF LA MANCHA for the Stratford Festival of Canada, FOREST BOY, for the New York Musical Festival, LIFE AFTER for the Toronto Fringe, as well as THE WILD PARTY, FALSETTOS, CAROLINE, OR CHANGE, for which Robert was nominated in the Outstanding Direction of a Play or Musical category at Toronto’s Dora Mavor Moore awards and THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA for Acting Up Stage Company (recently renamed The Musical Stage Company). Upcoming projects include the continued development of LIFE AFTER, which will open the 2017/18 season at Canadian Stage’s Berkeley Street Theatre and FUN HOME which Robert will direct as a co-production between The Musical Stage Company and Mirvish Productions. Internationally, Robert’s latest work includes direction and dramaturgy of the a new music theatre piece entitled WHERE ELEPHANTS WEEP, which had it’s world premiere at the Chenla Theatre, Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Along with an orchestra comprised of Cambodian traditional and contemporary musicians, this production brought together a company of actors, singers and dancers from Cambodia and North America. The material was developed and rehearsed both in Phnom Penh and New York City. The production was filmed by the Cambodian Television Network and was aired to 2 million viewers nation wide in that country. In 2009 Robert directed a Tokyo based creative team and acting company in a Japanese language production of the Rogers and Hammerstein musical CAROUSEL at the Galaxy Theatre in Tokyo. Recent opera productions include Vancouver Opera’s THE MAGIC FLUTE for which Robert served as director and dramaturge as well as creating the libretto adaptation. The project, developed over a three year period, was a collaboration between a 15 member creative team of Canadian Aboriginal and non-Native visual artists and theatre makers. Robert’s opera production includes: CAPRICIO, for Pacific Opera, LA BOHEME for the Canadian Opera Company, TURANDOT and IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA for Arizona Opera as well as Associate Direction on FAUST for Cincinnati Opera. Regionally, in North America, Robert’s directing assignments have included productions of: I AM MY OWN WIFE, AS YOU LIKE IT, THE CRADLE WILL ROCK, HAIR and PAL JOEY. As a dramaturge Robert has worked on the development of new musicals and operas in both Canada and the US for companies including The O’Neill Centre, CAP21, Acting Up Stage Company, Yonge Street Theatricals, The Arts Club Theatre, Vancouver Opera and the Canadian Opera Company. Robert has been invited to teach his master classes in both opera and theatre with Showa University, Tokyo, Vancouver Opera, The Canadian Opera Company, Pacific Opera Victoria, Cincinnati Opera and at Capilano University, Vancouver, Langara College, Vancouver, The Shanghai Academy, Shanghai, ArteStudio and Teatro Mejor, Mexico City, Horipro Productions, Tokyo, Cambodia Living Arts, Phnom Penh and T4F, Buenos Aires Argentina.
